Playing connects people. With the Tovertafel we bring smiles to the faces of people with dementia, people with learning disabilities and children with special care needs. Our games create happy moments and have a positive impact on our target groups. We call it purposeful play.
What is the effect of the Tovertafel?
The Tovertafel games challenge our target groups to develop or maintain skills in a playful and engaging way. The Tovertafel stimulates physical, sensory and cognitive activity and encourages social interaction. Tovertafel games are ‘serious games’ in the sense that they don't just create happy moments, but also improve the quality of life of the players. Focusing on strengths stimulates self-confidence and a sense of self-esteem among our target groups. This not only affects the target groups, but also their environment such as family and care workers. Being able to play together and to make contact is essential, so that people get to know each other better.
- In people with dementia, the games help break through apathy. Maintaining cognitive skills is the most important goal in this respect. People with dementia are confronted with things that they are no longer able to do on a daily basis. Playing with the Tovertafel allows them to experience what they can still do!
- In people with learning disabilities, the games stimulate social interaction.
What do Tovertafel-users say?
“Tovertafel is fantastic. We see people begin to move who otherwise would have remained inactive. It puts a smile back on people's faces and encourages interaction. It's the best thing I've seen so far to enhance joy in the lives of people with dementia.”
Jannie de Roos, activities supervisor
"When we turn the table on, we see a lot of enthusiasm. Playing with the Tovertafel can bring up a lot of emotions. Some clients become relaxed, while others become stimulated and start to engage with other players."
Paulien Otten, support worker at an activities centre
“The Tovertafel allows children to practice various skills and experience success in different developmental areas. It's great to see how much fun they have playing with the Tovertafel and how their confidence grows during the process.”
Ron Rovers, teacher at a special needs primary school
